The Salvation Army held the ribbon cutting ceremony and opening of their new playground on Tuesday, February 26. The playground was made possible by generous donations from Insurance Management Group and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.
"The Salvation Army of the Midlands is blessed to have such wonderful community partners like Insurance Management Group and BlueCross BlueShield to make this playground possible. We serve children throughout the entire year that will be able to use the play area while they are here," said Major Henry Morris with The Salvation Army.
Mark Ackerman, President of Insurance Management Group, was in attendance and shared his gratefulness to have been able to fund this project for children in need in the community. "Columbia is fortunate to have The Salvation Army of the Midlands serving the underserved in our community. Sincere thanks to BlueCross BlueShield of SC for their significant contribution in helping make this wonderful playground possible. The goal is to have a safe place for our underserved children to be children,” said Ackerman.
Children from The Salvation Army's Leveraging Literacy After School Reading Program attended the ceremony and presented cards to both Insurance Management Group and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina to thank each company for making the playground possible. After the ceremony, the children were able to play on the playground for the first time.
The playground will be used by children in the Leveraging Literacy Program, Youth Character-Building Program, Summer Day Camp and Sunday School programs. The Salvation Army's Center for Worship and Service is open Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.
