Treasurer Curtis Loftis and WSPA came together to help you find your lost money.
During the WSPA “Unclaimed Cash” phone bank Thursday, more than 6,300 people found unclaimed money being held for them at the State Treasurer’s Office. The total amount of money located was $1.8 million.
“We want to thank WSPA for partnering with us to locate the owners of unclaimed funds,” said Treasurer Loftis. “Many South Carolinians just don’t realize they could have money waiting for them. It’s their money and we want to put it back in their hands.”
During the evening news the Treasurer explained where unclaimed property comes from and how his office works to return the money to its rightful owners. Staff from the Treasurer’s Office helped callers search for unclaimed property.
"People think well I just wouldn't have any money, and they couldn't be more wrong," Treasurer Loftis said. "We've given back a lot of money to people who didn't even know they had any."
The State Treasurer’s Office currently has over $503 million in unclaimed property and over $100 million of this belongs to individuals in the Upstate.
The Unclaimed Property Program even returned $1,868.42 to WSPA.
