Monday, April 16th, 2018

South Carolina Campus Compact presented Winthrop’s retiring vice president for student life, Frank Ardaiolo, with its inaugural Civic Engagement Leader Award at the compact’s Leadership Summit on April 13.

Housed at Winthrop University, SCCC’s newest award recognizes individuals who “exemplify the spirit of personal and professional civic engagement in the purposes of higher education,” said Jessica Lynn, executive director of the compact. Lynn said the compact started the award in honor of Ardaiolo, who will retire this summer after 29 years of service to Winthrop.

“Dr. Ardaiolo has shown unwavering support for meeting community needs and developing students into engaged citizens and ensuring the continuation of South Carolina Campus Impact,” Lynn said. “It would not be here on campus if it weren’t for him.”

Other Winthrop awards included:

*The Faculty Award for Service Learning to Professor of Psychology and McNair Scholars Director Cheryl Fortner-Wood. This award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to integrating service learning into their curriculum.

*The Civic Engagement Professional Award to Karen Kedrowski, executive director of the Center for Civic Learning. This award recognizes full-time staff members for significant contributions to the institutionalization of community engagement.
