Two South Carolina Teachers Named Nation's Best

The White House has announced the most recent recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Two teachers from South Carolina were selected to represent represent K-6th grade educators from across the United States.
"I am so proud of the tremendous honor bestowed upon these deserving South Carolina educators," said State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman. "This award shows that they are providing their students with the highest quality instruction in crucial STEM fields."
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching. Established by Congress in 1983, the President may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year.
The award recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning. Since the program's inception, more than 4,700 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of STEM (including computer science) education.
South Carolina's winners are:
Sandra Bradshaw, Science
Midway Elementary
Anderson School District 5
Sandra Bradshaw has been an educator for 35 years, teaching at Midway Elementary School for the past 15 years. She currently teaches kindergarten through fifth grade STEM classes in a science lab setting.
Sandra utilizes a problem-based learning approach to engage students in inquiry and real-world problem solving. In her classroom, she facilitates learning and encourages students to collaborate and communicate to solve problems or make scientific discoveries.
Tami Broomall, Mathematics
Spartanburg School District 6
Tami Broomall, an educator for 22 years, has been a fourth and fifth grade teacher, a science lab instructor, and an instructional coach. Currently, she works in an instructional services role with the teachers of Spartanburg School District 6, supporting them with curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Tami is passionate about making sure all students are engaged, challenged, supported, and successful. To this end, she used Guided Math in her classroom so that students received differentiated small group instruction, as well as opportunities for problem solving, hands-on activities, and collaboration.
