SCE&G Warns Customers of Recent Phone Scam
Staff Report From South Carolina CEO
Friday, December 21st, 2018
SCE&G has received a flurry of calls from residential and business customers across the state who are reporting that they’ve received an automated message threatening to disconnect their service within an hour if they don’t make immediate payment. These “robo calls” are a scam. The scammers also may use caller ID “spoofing,” which causes a customer’s phone to display a false caller ID – perhaps even using the utility’s standard customer service phone number.
SCE&G would like to remind customers of the company’s payment practices:
SCE&G never calls customers directly asking for payment.
Prior to disconnecting gas or electric service for non-payment, SCE&G mails a notification to customers. SCE&G also emails customers and will provide a courtesy call the day before a scheduled disconnect (not the same day) to remind the customer of the amount due and the due date.
SCE&G does not prescribe or require specific payment methods. Customers may choose from a number of payment methods by visiting com/paying-my-bill.
SCE&G does not ask customers to meet in person to provide payment.
