The South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association awarded Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP Columbia partner Keith Poston its 2019 William E.S. Robinson Public Service Award at its Annual Seminar in Savannah on March 29, 2018.
The Robinson Award is given to a member of the South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association for having rendered distinguished public service to the legal profession and the community as was exemplified by the late Billy Robinson.
Poston focuses his practice in the areas of bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, consumer financial services litigation, and financial institutions. He is certified by the South Carolina Supreme Court as a specialist in bankruptcy and debtor/creditor law. He has been co-author to the South Carolina chapter of Bankruptcy Exemption Manual published by Thomson Reuters. In November 2018, the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges chose Poston to participate in its Next Generation Program, which hosts up to 40 up-and-coming bankruptcy practitioners with five to 10 years of experience.
Poston has distinguished himself at Nelson Mullins and beyond for his doggedness and successful pro bono representation of indigent clients, who would otherwise have no access to justice. His efforts cover four areas: foreclosure and bankruptcy matters on behalf of Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity; guardianship cases through the firm’s South Carolina Guardianship Project; divorces and custody cases, and drafting simple wills for first responders through the Wills for Heroes program.
Roy Kramer, executive director of Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity, praised Poston for helping their homeowners avoid foreclosure. “If they can come up with a plan, more times than not, Keith works it out. He’s pretty good at getting them back on track...He’s got a real heart for people and making sure they succeed, and don’t fail.”
In 2015, Poston received the Claude M. Scarborough, Jr. Award, which is awarded to a select group of Nelson Mullins attorneys each year for their outstanding commitment and contributions to pro bono work.
